The YMCA of Austin, Dripping Springs Branch is seeking Lead Lifeguards to join our team.

 We are looking for applicants for the following shift:

  • Monday-Friday 5:15am -10:30am & 5:00pm-9:30pm
  • Saturdays 7:45am -7:00pm
  • Sunday 11:45am -6:00pm

$10.00 - $11.00 per hour, depending  on experience


Under the direction of the YMCA Aquatics Director or the director responsible for Aquatics, the Lead lifeguard provides leadership in maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. This includes but is not limited to creating a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.


  • Must be interested in contributing to the mission of the YMCA.
  • Must have basic aquatic skills.
  • Some previous experience in aquatics is required.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard certification.
  • American Red Cross certification acceptable with YMCA crossover course.
  • Current First Aid, CPR/AED and Emergency Oxygen certifications.
  • Completion of the YMCA Child Abuse Prevention Training.
  • Must have reliable transportation to attend work
  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance and adhere to a welcoming and professional dress  code.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Computer aptitude and/or experience and have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


The member relations aspect of this position requires that relationship building be a top priority at all times, attending to the needs and requests of health seekers, members, and all people associated with the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and guidance to other lifeguards.
  • Protect the health, safety, and welfare of all persons in the pool area.
  • Follow personal attire requirements including wearing a staff t-shirt, appropriate swim attire (for women, this consists of one-piece suits), a whistle, fanny pack with rescue mask and rescue tube while on duty.
  • Know, understand, obey and enforce all rules and policies of the YMCA equally.
  • Know and follow the YMCA of Austin's Human Resources Guidelines, Code of Ethics, payroll procedures (including completing timesheets), and established emergency procedures.
  • Know and facilitate pool schedule (i.e. put in or remove lane markers).
  • Render first aid as needed and complete incident/accident report form for every injury/altercation on the premises.
  • Complete basic pool maintenance duties including, but not limited to taking and recording water tests at regular intervals, adjusting chemicals.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the area; remove items that need attention and report all needed repairs to your supervisor.
  • Greet all members and participants and record attendance.
  • Attend all required meetings and/or trainings.
  • Arrive on deck at least 5 minutes prior to guarding assignment and complete your designated shift until your substitute arrives.
  • Never leave the pool area while guarding unless another certified guard can watch the pool. If another guard is not available, you must remove the swimmers from the pool.
  • Secure a substitute lifeguard if you cannot make a scheduled shift.
  • If your shift ends when the pool is closing, clear the pool of all swimmers, turn off the lights and post the "pool closed11 sign(s).
  • Actively and enthusiastically support the Branch and Association goals and directions through effective completion of tasks and verbal display to peers, staff, members and guests.
  • Take leading role in emergency situations and guide the team.
  • May assist in scheduling lifeguards and coordinating pool activities.
  • Assist in all inservice trainings and audit drills.



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, talk and occasionally lift and/or move items including equipment.
  • Must be able to remain alert, sit or stand for extended periods of time, hear noises and distinguish distress signals, scan all areas of the pool with clear vision, perform all physical tasks necessary for water rescues, communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
